Completed in 2018, the design for this leisure facility included the extension to an existing sports hall to include a 6 lane 25m competition pool, learner pool, 110 station fitness suite, new café and reception area. Through a limited design competition, BRL were commissioned by the local authority to deliver the highest possible standards in sporting facilities within a modest construction budget. By utilising much of the existing changing provision and organising the circulation spaces in an efficient manner, this leisure centre has proved an enormous success for the local community.

One of the key design decisions in being awarded this commission was the inclusion of a large fitness facility over the learner pool, which was not part of the architectural brief. By effectively utilising the existing structure, this new fitness suite allowed for operational viability over the lifespan of the building and provided a ‘gateway’ architectural statement to the site entrance.

Testament to BRL’s commitment to sustainable development, this project was accredited a BREEAM very good rating. Such a rating on a highly serviced leisure facility is particularly challenging given the energy demands of swimming pools and the tight budgetary constraints.

By adopting innovative technologies and a holistic approach to sustainable development, BRL has demonstrated leisure facilities can be operated with significant reductions in energy usage and consequential energy costs.
