We were appointed by the Yusef Islam Foundation to complete the renovations and conversion of a former Catholic church to provide a multi-faith centre to the community of Brent, North London.
The foundation developed a concept to bring groups from different faiths together in a single building, which would foster community relationships and shared experiences.
This exciting project was designed internally to provide an indoor swimming pool, health spa, a large multi-use performance hall, exhibition space, community facilities and a café.
Internally, the design ethos was developed in close collaboration with various community groups and stakeholders to provide a series of spaces that allowed for a welcoming and peaceful environment. Natural materials used both internally and externally brought cohesion to the architecture and facilitated a sense of relaxation and harmony.
Whilst maintaining the architectural integrity of the existing structure, BRL designed a series of external interventions to breathe new life into the former church, which had been vacant for a number of years.
