Sidcup Leisure Centre was won in a competition bid alongside the Leisure Operator, Parkwood Leisure. The Leisure Centre is located in a parkland setting close to the Town Centre facilities of Sidcup.
BRL received an award for this project as the Best Sustainable Building in the whole of the Greater London area. The building’s sustainable features include solar/electricity panels, heat recovery system, and grey water recycling.
Following planning permission, the project was procured on a Design and Build basis with BRL novated across to the Main Contractor. The unashamedly contemporary design acts as a ‘pavilion in the park’.
The extensive full height glazing to the front entrance is shielded from overheating by an external steel frame with louvres inserted into the frame to create a ‘Brise soleil’.
This architectural feature of the building with its light structure reduces the perceived bulk and massing of the building behind in this sensitive parkland setting.
The curved frontage of the building is reflected in curved terracotta clad elements to the side of the building. This further softens the impact on the parkland setting.
