As part of the Medway Council’s aspiration for city status by 2035, this project in Chatham pioneers an innovative approach to rejuvenating neglected brownfield sites. The proposals are for the construction of 229 apartments disposed in four strikingly designed blocks. At street level there will be an entrance podium, carefully modulated in form and landscape to provide an exciting new addition to The Brook. Within this ground floor there will be resident leisure facilities including a pool, gym and meeting areas. Between the blocks are carefully designed courtyards as additional amenity space for the residents, elevated from the road and providing an oasis of calm.
These spaces are further complimented by roof gardens with their panoramic views in quiet, sunlit seclusion. This innovative project has taken many years to evolve. The design has been developed to respond to the rich historic context of Chatham. This is evident in the detailing and choice of materials throughout, which reflect the maritime heritage and predominance of brick.
The scheme not only maintains 100 public parking spaces, but improves the security, quality and functionality for the 21st Century. Spaces and infrastructure will be provided for electric vehicles and the new development will actively promote more sustainable forms of transport.
