We were appointed to explore redevelopment options for a historic hotel estate, situated on the edge of a scenic valley with a rich history dating back centuries. Despite its picturesque setting and unique character, the hotel has seen a decline in guest numbers, prompting the need for a thoughtful and sustainable transformation.

The proposed development focuses on converting part of the existing hotel into extra-care independent living accommodations, addressing the growing demand for senior housing in the area. The design integrates new building additions, including an extension to the northern end of the hotel and a standalone pavilion connected via a glazed walkway.

The extra-care facility will offer spacious one- and two-bedroom apartments tailored to the mobility needs of older adults, with on-hand care services. The new pavilion serves as the primary entrance, featuring a reception area, admin offices, and visitor accommodations. Communal facilities, including a restaurant, lounge, library, and treatment rooms, are located in the semi-basement, with access to a landscaped garden and veranda.

The scale of the new development is in keeping with the existing hotel, with careful attention to maintaining the height and massing to protect the surrounding Green Belt. By repurposing the hotel and adding modern facilities, the project will create a sustainable, long-term housing solution for seniors, while enhancing the overall appeal of the estate.
