Forming the entrance to Millbay Marina and the gateway to Plymouth’s waterfront, Millbay Marina Village was partially developed over 20 years ago, with a selection of mews houses facing the marina and a large apartment block at the rear of the site. BRL were commissioned by the landowner to obtain planning permission for 3 large areas, which were not completed as part of the original development.
In collaboration with multiple stakeholders on this challenging site overlooking the spectacular Plymouth Sound, Mount Edgecombe and Drakes Island, BRL developed a scheme of 3 separate blocks containing 142 apartments.
The apartment block located on the existing pier design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, takes an iconic form representative of the ribs of a ship, complementing the historic maritime history of Plymouth. This gateway building will form an impressive and aspirational entrance to Plymouth for visitors entering the city via the ferry port.
